Founded in 2015 by 4 friends via Twitter, seeking to share their love for “those weird books” they read (or so people IRL call them). The book club quickly outgrew tweeting back and forth, and moved to GroupMe, a group messaging app, as more Twitter users became interested in reading together. However, GroupMe, at the time, only allowed 16 members in a group chat and the book club was becoming more organized, and needed something more dynamic.

This was just before Discord initially released (May 13, 2015), so taking inspiration from online gaming groups using BAND, we migrated our group to communicate in different chat rooms, have a main group feed, and schedule calendar events.

The Lit Coven of the present, calls Discord home and has grown into a space for readers to come together, make friends, read books, and support each other.

Instagram Story Series

Each of the five 14-second videos announce the books chosen to vote for and their description, for The Lit Coven’s member poll to decide the next two month’s book choices.

Sharing via Instagram creates awareness and provides value to followers by serving the book descriptions directly to them, instead of having to remember or write down book titles and searching on their own.

The caption reads, "Well, we're jumping into 2021 with The Feels of all sorts, but having a spot to go for specifics has always been a help. The Lit Coven is coming up on our 6th-year together."

Awareness & Engagement

This was posted in January (2021) when engagement is usually slower on social media and in the Discord channels.
I received feedback that some of their social media followers weren’t aware that The Lit Coven is based on Discord; along with a sentiment of “I wish I had a book club” gathered from social listening; I wanted to get The Lit Coven on the radar of the existing members and followers.

The image allows for a peek into the channel set-up within Discord, as the unknown often deters.

This post achieved the objectives of converting Instagram followers into Discord members and increasing reach.

This was shared with our Discord community after an end-of-the-year survey. Other statistics remained admin-facing only.

To increase survey participation within our digital community, the survey is announced shortly before it goes live, to create awareness. There is a set timeline of 1-2 weeks for members to take the survey, with reminders throughout.

We use feedback from the survey to shape programming and experience.
